LaMarr Woodley has been giving back to the community ever since he was in college at the University of Michigan. While there LaMarr started an event with former Michigan State University football player and current St. Louis Rams defensive lineman Clifton Ryan. The two launched the Heroes For Kids benefit, a yearly golf outing, as a way to give back to Saginaw, MI, where both were born and played sports when they were younger. Woodley and Ryan bring along about 20 of their teammates each year to take part in the golf portion of the Heroes For Kids event and to later sign autographs for Saginaw children. Even after graduating from their respective Universities, and making it in the pros, LaMarr and Clifton have remained committed to the event and the children of Saginaw, returning every summer for the Heroes For Kids event.
To further strengthen his bond with the community of Saginaw, LaMarr established the LaMarr Woodley Annual Football Camp held in June of each year. This is a free camp for 300 local Saginaw area kids ages 8-14 at Saginaw High School. Kids receive t-shirts, Papa John's lunch, Gatorade and Nike bags. They also each receive autographs from LaMarr and his NFL friends in attendance who participate in the event.
In addition to giving back to his hometown community, LaMarr has also taken an active role in his new adopted hometown of Pittsburgh, PA. LaMarr heads up the Holiday Toy Drive, held every year at The Mall at Robinson. The players signed autographs in exchange for the donation of a new, unwrapped toy to benefit Children's Child Life Department. The Child Life Department provides support, education and assistance to children, teens and their families who are adjusting to illness or hospitalization through programs and services appropriate for children's development, emotional and educational needs.
Recently LaMarr donated an authentic signed Super Bowl football, photograph and a personalized Terrible Towel from Hometowne Sports to a child in need, Benjamin Reece. In March of 2009, Benjamin was diagnosed with Metopic Craniosynostosis, a premature fusing of the sutures in the skull which restricts skull growth and can cause brain and vision problems as a child grows if not surgically corrected. The surgery was a success and Benjamin is recovering nicely.
LaMarr also works closely with the Steelers' community relations department through various team events. On any given week, you can find LaMarr at the local Boys and Girls Club. Due to LaMarr's involvement with the Boys and Girls Club he was honored nationally by them with the "Dedication to Youth" Award at their recent awards banquet.
